Our country was founded on principles that privileged some and excluded others. The resulting system of bias makes many things more difficult for women and people of color. This includes running for office.
Until leaders at all levels look more like the overall population, there will continue to be racial biases baked into our democracy. That’s why we need your voice at the table. In this session, we will discuss how to center the needs, challenges, and triumphs in your community as you battle a system that was initially set up to exclude you from participation.
This interactive virtual workshop will focus on developing the specific skills of building and facilitating safe and diverse environments and community organizing to advance racial justice.
Join women from all over the state to talk about race and gender diversity. This month Elizabeth Stribling with South Carolina Women in Leadership talks with Emily Geiger Smith, author of Thank You for Voting: the Maddening, Enlightening, Inspiring Truth About Voting in America, and David Daley, author of the National bestseller, Ratf**ked: Why Your Vote Doesn’t Count and Unrigged: How Americans Are Battling Back to Save Democracy. In this episode you’ll hear their thoughts on: legislative redistricting currently underway in South Carolina and what invested organizations like SC WIL and citizens might do to make sure their votes count for the next ten years; the ebb and flow of voting rights and access through the years and their perspectives as to whether we are “bending towards justice”; how the “boiling point” were at, demonstrated by the insurrection on the Capitol on January 6, makes horrifying sense; and if we can be optimistic about the future of our democracy.
Leadership is about doing our best to serve the mission, values, and people we work with and for. No matter our qualifications or intent we will likely make mistakes or disagree with others as we pursue big ideas and worthy goals. This means we will likely experience feedback, criticism, and rejection at some point along the way.
Learn helpful tips on how and what to do when contacting your elected representatives, with a focus on holding your state legislators accountable for how legislative district maps are drawn based on 2020 Census data. We will identify your representatives, practice different approaches and discuss follow-up actions.
