Republican Sheri Biggs, a nurse practitioner and Air National Guard lieutenant colonel, will soon be the newest member of South Carolina’s congressional delegation.
Biggs beat out newcomer Democrat Bryon Best and Independent Mike Bedenbaugh with 71 percent of the vote Nov. 5, according to unofficial state election results that saw 173,558 votes cast.
The Associated Press called the race at 8:17 p.m.
Biggs succeeds Republican Rep. Jeff Duncan to represent South Carolina’s Third Congressional District, which spans 11 rural counties from the Upstate down toward the Midlands.
She is the second Republican woman elected to represent the Palmetto State in Congress, joining Nancy Mace of the coastal First District.
Biggs thanked her supporters and, with misty eyes, thanked her husband, Bill, and her father and mother, who stood at the front of the crowd.
“While this campaign has been a long journey, this is just the beginning of the work that needs to be done,” Biggs told the room full of family, friends and voters in Anderson.
“America has been through four years of weak foreign policy, out-of-control inflation, lawlessness at the southern border and a total deconstruction of our social fabric and the foundation of ‘one nation, under God,'” Biggs said. “I’m ready to get to work to heal our nation’s mental, fiscal and spiritual problems.”
Biggs is the only shakeup in the delegation, joining incumbent representatives Mace; Joe Wilson, SC-02; William Timmons, SC-04; Ralph Norman, SC-05; James Clyburn, SC-06 (the state’s lone Democrat); and Russell Fry, SC-07.
