SESSIONS:

Why Do I Want To Serve?
Presenter: Kenya Dunn, COO, Lifetagger and CEO & Founder, The Power Filled Woman

What are the issues you care about, the problems you want to solve, the change you demand? Why are you the best person to solve them? Learn how to communicate the issues you care about, the problems you wish to solve, and what sets you apart from other candidates. This session includes practical tips for developing and delivering a unique and persuasive message.

How will this work in my real life?
Presenter:  Ashley Peele, Former Candidate for Mayor of North Charleston and Charleston County School Board

Your life is already full. How do you fit a campaign, term in public office, or serving on an appointed board into it? We’ll give you tools to figure out:

  • what you are currently doing with the hours available to you
  • how to make a financial plan to make your run possible
  • how a run will impact your job or career
  • how to ask for help with your personal caregiving responsibilities

Opportunity Seats
Presenters: Sara Ballard, COO, SC WIL and Emily Bowerman, Appointed Office Director, SC WIL

Think you don’t know enough [or the “right”] people to get elected or appointed? Local and county offices, boards, and commissions may be more approachable than you think!

We’ll present voter registration and voter turnout examples for several local districts and show you where to find information for your district. You may be surprised at the number of votes you need to win a local elected office like mayor, town council, school board, or county council.

If you’re interested in serving on a public appointed board or commission, there are thousands of vacant seats across the state. We’ll share where you can find opportunities to serve in appointed office that meets your interest and experience.

Fundraising 101
Presenter: Emily Mayer, Political Strategist, The Ford & Ford Group and Candidate for Bluffton Town Council

You’re going to have to raise money for your campaign for elected office. This session will discuss how much you’ll have to raise depending on the office you’re running for and outline a basic fundraising plan.

Coffee & Networking
Stick around after the sessions for coffee, discussion, and networking with fellow participants and special guests.
