Nightmare on 30th Ave.
Today, nearly a year after election day, Atlantic Beach election lawsuits are finally headed to a Horry Co. judge. On the eve of Halloween, this election saga is a horror story straight out of a spooky tale, where democratic processes have vanished into the mist. Despite November 2023 elections, a year later, the seats of mayor and two council members remain shrouded in mystery. In an eerie twist, the town council disbanded the municipal election commission while votes were still under review, only to reassemble it and fire the chairman, leaving a cloud of suspicion over the results.
The haunting reality is that former council members refuse to vacate their seats and councilmember Carla Taylor, fairly elected in November 2023 was removed from the council chambers and denied her rightful place when she appeared to be sworn in. Lawsuits and protests are looming with the Horry County Court of Common Pleas set to hold a hearing on October 30, on the eve of Halloween, to untangle the web of challenges and contested ballots.
As the tale unfolds, rumors of corruption and whispers of misdeeds have spread through the town, giving the air of a haunted house of democracy. Reports of rushed hirings, unfilled positions, and sudden firings add to this unfolding nightmare.
Meanwhile, proposed legislation that would have required holdover officials to stay only during challenges—a sensible fix to prevent such chaotic scenes—was killed in the last session of the General Assembly by the Freedom Caucus. Now, the town sits in limbo, citizens left in suspense, waiting to see if justice or further chaos will prevail. What will unfold for Atlantic Beach? Will this nightmare continue? Without fair democracy in place, nightmares like this can become realities.
