Jamilla Harper Shares Her WIL Why
Jamilla Harper, of North Charleston, was recently appointed to a board seat for the Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Council of Governments. We are proud of Jamilla for stepping up, and it’s a reminder that not all leadership positions are elected. There are equally important opportunities to lead on appointed boards and commissions across the state. We spoke with Jamilla after her appointment was confirmed and asked her to share advice with other women seeking appointed office. Here is what she had to say:
SC WIL: What does this seat mean to you?
Jamilla: “Serving in this seat represents an opportunity to amplify community voices and prioritize sustainable, equitable growth for all South Carolinians. It’s a chance to create meaningful change rooted in collaboration and inclusion.”
SC WIL: Why did you choose to put your name in the hat for this position?
Jamilla: “I chose to step forward because change doesn’t wait for permission. It felt necessary to bring my voice, my experience in community-driven development, and my imagination to the table to help design a future that honors everyone.”
SC WIL: What do you want other female leaders to know?
Jamilla: “You are powerful because you are necessary. Lead with purpose, lean into the unknown, and remember that creating change begins with your willingness to act and critically reflect.”
SC WIL: How has SC WIL helped you in the appointed office process?
Jamilla: “SC Women in Leadership has been a helpful guide — provided invaluable resources, advice, and encouragement, making the appointment process approachable and easy to navigate. The team inspired me to step into the unknown of applying for an appointed office seat while equipping me to transform the unknown into possibility.”
SC WIL: What are your hopes/dreams as a female leader for SC?
Jamilla: “I hope to see South Carolina thrive through inclusive leadership, shared power, and bold imagination so that all communities have access to opportunity, sustainable growth, and resilience for generations to come.”
